Waste is everybody's business (continued)

"I don't produce a lot of waste and disposal is
a small part of my overall business costs"

No matter how big or small the volume of waste, all businesses can do their bit, waste disposal costs will continue to rise with the landfill tax escalator that has been set by the government. The increasing costs of disposing waste to landfill will make sustainable waste management more economically viable. Can your business afford to ignore waste issues?

Definition: Landfill Tax is a tax collected per tonne of waste added on top of disposal costs. It was introduced to reduce the amount we send to landfill and act as a financial incentive to use more sustainable methods of waste disposal. It is currently £18 per tonne and is set to rise at £3 a year until it reaches £35 per tonne per year when it will be reviewed by the government. The tax collected is used for environmental projects and helps mitigate the effects of landfill on local communities.
"We have little control over the packaging waste we receive"

Our waste minimisation officer can assist you reduce your packaging waste, help you work with your suppliers and find alternative uses internally or through a waste exchange.

"Mixed-waste streams make recycling difficult"

We can offer you colour coded bins, label or sack systems, as well as waste awareness training for your employees to ensure maximum segregation and minimum contamination.

"I am keen to help my company but
can't get everyone's support"

We can help you make the business case and also get employees on board by offering a waste awareness programme for businesses which can include talks, displays, and information on how to create your own in-house waste initiatives.

A potential barrier which can stop businesses from developing sustainable waste management practices is lack of awareness about the true cost of waste. Every business is individual but all businesses are concerned about their economic status and whether you are addressing your waste issues or not, there is more that can be done.

There are many useful sources of information from local environmental networks and online advice to waste audits and running your own waste awareness campaign. There are a variety of initiatives available and we can help and support you through the process of waste management and make your business more waste friendly. The process will also highlight where you could be managing resources more efficiently in your day to day processes and ultimately save your business money.

The following pages present case studies which show how businesses can make a big impact, how they are demonstrating best practice when it comes to waste minimisation and how you can make your business waste aware. We also describe some of the recycling services that are available as well as our partners who are helping to provide quality and added value services to businesses in Perth and Kinross.
