Working With Waste (continued)
Can-Able Recycling began as a small environmental awareness group in Blairgowrie Adult Resource Centre in 1999, initially collecting a variety of recyclates the group decided to concentrate their efforts on aluminium and steel drinks cans. This enabled the group to go out and about in the local community and collect cans from households and businesses. In 2002, with the help of a grant from the 'Change Fund' Can-Able Recycling brought a dedicated can collection vehicle, enabling them to expand their collection service to other areas of Perth and Kinross. The following year they moved into premises at the Welton Road Industrial Estate in Blairgowrie and set up the separating and baling side of the operation. Can-Able now collects from over 300 sites throughout Perth and Kinross including from businesses, schools and other organisations. This totals approximately 2.24 million cans or 34 tonnes per year. Can-Able Recycling is much more than a successful can collection and recycling initiative. Continual development to meet the needs of people with learning disabilities is Can-Able's priority, running the can recycling service makes it possible for individuals to learn new skills by carrying out the various tasks involved. 32 people with learning difficulties currently receive a service. As part of the development, Can-Able recently attained S.Q.A accreditation as a training centre and can now offer vocational training opportunities and qualifications to people with learning difficulties. Can-Able Recycling continues to develop and grow to meet the individual need as well as contributing to the environment and recycling initiative. Can-Able Recycling look forward to a bright future and are moving into their new recycling and training premises in autumn of this year.
