Working With Waste (continued)

Collecting materials from businesses throughout the region |
Wyllie Recycling is a local business based in Inveralmond Industrial Estate in Perth providing collection and recycling services throughout Perth & Kinross, the rest of Tayside and beyond.
In 2003, Jim and Mary Wyllie took over the company from James Henderson which had been operating since 1976 and have expanded the vehicle and skip fleet, increased turnover and created new employment for an additional eight staff.
"We find it difficult to keep up with the demand from our markets for quality used paper, cardboard and plastic" says Jim Wyllie. "It surprises us that so much material still goes to landfill when it is such a valuable resource."
The company signed a partnership agreement with Perth & Kinross Council in 2004 to operate a cardboard collection service which now picks up from over 1250 businesses. Businesses put out cardboard at the kerbside, either using the green label system or a range of containers such as wheeled bins, cages and skips, dependent on the businesses needs. The cardboard is picked up by a dedicated cardboard collection vehicle and taken to be baled before being sent to be recycled into new cardboard products.
Future plans include investment in additional equipment over the next few years to increase the volumes of materials being recycled and decrease the waste sent to landfill. A new 50 tonne weighbridge will be installed and open for use in September 2005 allowing closer monitoring of waste flows and provide real time reports for customers who require accurate statistical information on recycling rates.
Jim Wyllie adds "We are well placed to provide a variety of services to meet our customer's needs, with the added guarantee of a reliable and efficient service that complies with all environmental legislation".
