Good Intensions
by Tracy Walker, Callum Walker Interiors
Once all the turkey is done and the decorations are put away, what do our thoughts turn to?
Dark nights and cold weather, keep us close to home with plans for the New Year being hatched, many of which involve the home and let's face it, we have plenty of time to contemplate what we would like to do with our Scottish winters.
A few small changes however can change the look of a kitchen completely whether it is a different theme that is sought or just a freshen up, it needn't cost the earth.

Replacing handles is an easy way to spruce up existing cabinetry with hundreds of options to choose from including glass, steel, leather and timber in both modern and traditional designs. Kitchens that are originally fitted with knobs give the greatest flexibility, as you don't have to stick to existing drill holes.

New appliances always give a lift, in particular exposed items such as the oven, hob and hood. Appliances which are built into furniture tend to follow standard sizes so are easy to swap over and your local retailer would be happy to advise and provide options for your consideration. Coloured appliances such as white, green and brown are becoming slightly harder to source but options are still available. Stainless Steel is a popular choice and has many different options available in size and
specification and co-ordinates well with many different kitchen finishes.
The cleaning of Stainless Steel needn't be such a chore with the introduction of products such as the e-cloth on the market. Recommended by many of the top appliance manufactures, it is a non chemical cleaning system using textured cloths and warm water to bring up a variety of surfaces. Especially good on Stainless Steel, it can also be used on Granite, Glass, Painted and Timber surfaces.

A change in work surfaces is also an option but prepare for a little bit more of an upheaval. Do watch out for trickier change overs such as surfaces with tiled walls above them. In these cases it is worth investigating whether or not you have or can source a couple of extra tiles just in case some are dislodged when tops are removed.
With any of these changes, add a lick of paint and some co-ordinating accessories and the kitchen will be sparkling, ready to see in the New Year.
